Oncology is the study of cancer. As an oncologist, Dr. Gould is involved in diagnosing, staging, treating, and following individuals with cancer. At the most basic level, cancer occurs when normal cells mutate and begin to grow out of control. These cells have the potential to spread throughout the body and cause one to become quite ill. Cancer is not a single disease entity. Breast cancer is different from lung cancer, and the tissue of origin plays a large part in determining the prognosis and treatment options.
However, even within breast cancer, there are variations at the molecular level which determine the cancer's susceptibility to one treatment over another.
Cancer treatment today does not just mean chemotherapy. While chemo-therapy is a cornerstone of cancer therapy, it is not the only option. Newer targeted therapies, immunotherapies, hormonal therapies, surgery, and radiation also play important roles in battling cancer. In addition, as supportive therapies have improved, there is less nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and infection which have traditionally been associated with cancer treatment.
No one treatment plan is right for everybody, and Dr. Gould is committed to taking the time and working with each person to come up with a treatment strategy that is right for them. Dr. Gould understands that feeling comfortable with your doctor, getting the information you need, and having the time to have all your questions answered is of the utmost importance.
