What is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of blood and the treatment of blood diseases.  Blood is composed of white blood cells which fight infection, red blood cells which carry oxygen to the organs, and platelets which help to stop bleeding.  In addition, the plasma of blood contains many proteins which work with the platelets to regulate coagulation.  When there are imbalances in these blood components, people are at risk for infections, bleeding, blood clots, and in extreme circumstances, strokes and heart attacks.  Dr. Gould treats the full spectrum of these disorders from anemias to polycythemias, from hypercoaguable states to hemophilias.
